Modern science teaches us that where two seas meet, there is an invisible barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas with each having its own temperature, salinity, and density. This is discussed in the Quran, but also the difference with another barrier, namely that between fresh and salt water.
The Separation Between The Seas
The Mediterranean Sea is warmer, saltier, and denser than the water of the Atlantic Ocean. The waters of the Mediterranean Sea enter the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, at the Strait of Gibraltar.
There it moves several hundred kilometers into the Atlantic Ocean, at a depth of about one kilometer. Here it retains its own characteristics with regard to heat, salinity, and less density. The water of the Mediterranean Sea is limited at this depth.
Due to the barrier between the seas, their properties are preserved. Even down to a depth of 1,400 meters and at a distance that varies between -100 and 2,500 meters, the seas maintain their own temperature and salinity. Despite high waves, strong currents, and changing tides, the barrier remains.
In the Qur’an, the barrier between two seas is mentioned in the following two verses:
The separation between the sea and a river
On the other hand, the Qur’an also speaks of the dividing line between fresh and salt water, and the fact that the waters must not mix:
[Quran 25:53]
The Qur’an makes a clear specific difference by mentioning the secretion when speaking of fresh and salt water. This separation is not discussed when it comes to the boundary between the two seas. This has a clear reason and we can explain it today.

Science has found that in estuaries, where fresh and saltwater meet, the situation differs from places where two seas meet. The difference lies in the distinction, which is made by the large difference in salinity, between low fresh and low salt water. This separation is formed by a pycnocline zone (a boundary layer between water with different temperatures or salinities), with a strong density discontinuity between the two layers.
The separation zone is therefore created by the large difference in salinity of the fresh and salt water.
Conclusion
This information has only recently been discovered using sophisticated equipment. Equipment for measuring the temperature, salinity, density, and oxygen solutions. With the human eye, you cannot see the border between the two seas. We only see one homogeneous sea. Also, you cannot see the separations of water in estuaries; namely fresh water, salt water, and the separation zone. It is clear that the above verses are confirmed by modern science.
